The Texas Rangers offense has been an exhausting watch in 2026. We’ve seen a mixed bag, with some players greatly exceeding expectations and some falling well short of them. The undeniable outcome: A 26th-ranked offense in MLB, averaging 4.15 runs per game.

The offense clearly has not been good enough. So, what’s missing?

Reviewing the Rangers’ cast of hitters, they have a number of reliable supporting actors, but they’re missing a show-stopping main character.

Corey Seager played the main character for years. Rangers fans know him best for his role as World Series MVP in an Oscar-winning production from 2023. But the spotlight over Seager has faded some. It’s possible he’s now passed his prime.

The Rangers look around the industry and see stars all around. Stars like Pete Crow-Armstrong in Chicago, Aaron Judge in New York, and Shohei Ohtani in Los Angeles. Stars in their prime, thriving on the biggest stages, owning the spotlight, proving capable of taking those around them to superb heights.

Where can Texas find its star – its showstopper?

They had up and coming talents in Wyatt Langford and Evan Carter, but neither has owned the screen in the way the Rangers had hoped. Ezequiel Duran stretched his talent quite far this season, though it’s unlikely he’ll become the showstopper – not for an Oscar-worthy production, at least. No other Rangers have shown signs of becoming the next star.

There is one great hope, well within their grasp. That’s #1 organizational prospect and 9th-ranked MLB prospect, Sebastian Walcott. Walcott is probably the Rangers’ most hyped prospect since Jurickson Profar. He’s a five-tool infielder that’s slashing .329/.406/.613/1.019 at Double-A Frisco this season. As long as he stays healthy, he will join the Rangers in 2027.

Calling Walcott a star before he’s made his MLB debut would be presumptuous. But it comes with the territory for a prospect as highly-touted as he is. Walcott must live up to the hype if the Rangers offense is to take a significant step forward. Texas should have him on set by next April. Then, we’ll see how quickly he can adapt to stardom.

If the next Rangers star doesn’t come from within the organization, Texas will have to find one elsewhere, either through free agency or the trade market. Neither avenue is particularly simple.

The upcoming free agent class is lacking in star position players. Ronald Acuña Jr. is the lone obvious superstar, and the Braves will certainly exercise the 2027 club option in his contract. That leaves Texas with a relatively thin market for the kind of impact bat it needs.

The trade market could offer more possibilities. The Dodgers acquired superstar Tarik Skubal in August, while Juan Soto has been involved in two blockbuster trades this decade. Trades involving superstars do happen, but pulling them off requires a well-stocked farm system and the financial flexibility to retain them long term.

The Rangers aren’t particularly strong in either area. Their farm system lacks depth, and any blockbuster package would likely require Sebastian Walcott to headline the return. With Walcott so close to reaching the majors, it would be difficult to justify parting with him – no matter who Texas gets in return.

Texas did create some financial flexibility by avoiding the luxury tax in 2026, giving the organization some room to pursue a marquee free agent or extend a newly acquired star. Ultimately, though, that will depend on ownership’s willingness to spend.

The next 12 months should be quite telling. The Rangers aren’t far away from contention, but they’re not close, either. They have quality pieces in place on offense, but they need a showstopper. They need a dynamic position player who can notch 30 home runs and 100 RBI, come up clutch with runners on base, and strike fear in the opponent. This could arrive in the form of Walcott, an emerging free agent, or a blockbuster trade. It better arrive, because rinsing and repeating won’t get them very far.
